8 Sex Positions for Her Orgasm (What Actually Changes the Odds)

Dan Purcell

Hi, I’m Dan! I have Master’s Degree in Counseling and am a professional marriage coach, with a specialty in helping Christian couples find joy and connection through sexual intimacy. My wife Emily and I are the founders of Get Your Marriage On! We have 6 children and love the outdoors.

The sad truth is that most of the sex positions people talk about are optimized for him. They are built around depth and thrusting, and depth and thrusting are not what most women need in order to finish.

Fewer than a third of women reach orgasm from penetration alone. That is not a problem with those women and it is not a problem with their husbands. It is anatomy. The clitoris is where the nerve endings are, and a position that does not make contact with it is asking her body to do something it is not built to do.

So the eight sex positions for her orgasm below are chosen on one criterion: each of them puts clitoral contact at the center rather than leaving it to chance. For each one I have included the adjustment that actually makes it work, because anybody can list positions. The adjustment is the part that matters.

The One Thing That Changes the Odds

If you remember nothing else from this page, remember this: clitoral contact is the variable, not depth.

Once you know that, every position on this list makes sense, and so does every adjustment. You are not looking for a more athletic position. You are looking for a position where her clitoris is getting steady, repeated contact for long enough to build.

Three things do most of the work:

  • Grinding rather than thrusting. A rocking or circular motion keeps contact constant. Thrusting breaks contact on every stroke, which is exactly the wrong rhythm.
  • Angle, usually from a pillow. A pillow or wedge under her hips changes the angle of entry by a few degrees, and a few degrees is often the whole difference. Bodies vary enormously, so this is worth experimenting with.
  • A hand, hers or his. Adding direct stimulation during intercourse is not a sign that the position failed. It is the most reliable thing on this list.

Every position below does at least one of those three by design.

8 Sex Positions for Her Orgasm

1. Wife on top

This is the one to start with. She controls the angle, the pressure, the speed and the depth, all four, and she can adjust any of them without stopping to explain anything. Ruth Buezis put it plainly on the podcast: the single most successful position for a woman to orgasm during intercourse is her on top, because she can create exactly the stimulation she wants.

The adjustment: grind, do not bounce. Leaning forward and rocking her hips lets her clitoris press against his pubic bone, and that pressure is what builds. Bouncing up and down feels athletic and delivers almost nothing where it counts.

2. The Coital Alignment Technique

A formal name for a small change to missionary. He slides his body up the bed a few inches so the base of his penis rests against her clitoris, and then instead of thrusting in and out, the movement becomes a rocking motion, forward and back or side to side.

The adjustment: she tips her pelvis upward to meet him. I walked through this one in detail on episode 207, and it is worth a few tries before you judge it. It feels strange the first time and then it does not.

3. Missionary with a pillow under her hips

Ordinary missionary, one pillow, completely different experience. Stacking a pillow or a wedge under her hips tilts her pelvis and changes the angle of entry. It sounds too simple to matter. It is often the difference between a position that does nothing for her and one that does.

The adjustment: experiment with the height. One pillow, two pillows, folded or flat. Bodies come in every shape, and some men curve upward or to one side, so the angle that works for you is not the angle from a diagram. It is worth ten minutes of trial and error to find.

4. Seated, facing each other

He sits in a chair without arms or cross-legged on the bed, and she sits facing him in his lap. There is very little thrusting available in this position, which is exactly why it belongs on a list about her orgasm. What is available instead is grinding, and grinding is what works.

The adjustment: she leans back slightly and finds the angle where her clitoris makes contact, then stays there and repeats the same small motion. The instinct is to keep varying it. Resist that. Consistency is what builds an orgasm, and this is the position where couples most often break the rhythm right before it would have worked.

5. Oral, with her straddling him

He lies on his back and she kneels over him, straddling his face so he can use his mouth on her. Let me be straight about why this one is on a list of positions: it is not intercourse, and it belongs here anyway. For most women, oral is the single most reliable route to orgasm there is.

What makes this version different from him going down on her the usual way is that she is in control of it. She sets the pressure, the angle, and the rhythm, and she can move a quarter of an inch to exactly where she needs it without having to describe anything out loud. It is the same reason wife on top works, applied to the most effective form of stimulation available.

The adjustment: she takes her weight on her knees and holds the headboard or the wall, so she can stay there comfortably for as long as she needs rather than hovering and tiring out. And husbands, say something first. A lot of wives feel self-conscious in this position the first time, and knowing he genuinely wants to be there is what lets her relax into it. Our guide to oral sex for women covers the technique in far more detail.

6. Leaning forward, from behind

She leans forward onto the edge of the bed, a couch, or a kitchen counter, with him standing or kneeling behind her. Stallion style, if you want a better name for it than the usual one.

The adjustment: she controls the angle by shifting how far forward she leans and how she arches her back. This position also leaves both of his hands free and puts her own hand within easy reach, which is why it appears on a list about her orgasm at all. Without that, it is one of the least likely positions to get her there.

7. Edge of the bed

She lies on her back at the edge of the bed or sits on the edge of a chair or sofa; he kneels or stands in front of her. This gives him a completely different angle from missionary, and it gives both of you clear access.

The adjustment: put a pillow under her hips here too, and let him use a hand. I mentioned this position on episode 259 for a reason. The upright angle and the free hands are what make it work.

8. Side-lying, from behind

Both of you on your sides, him behind her. The angle is shallow and the pace is naturally slow, and neither of you has to hold yourself up.

The adjustment: his top hand is completely free and already in the right place. Of everything on this list, this is the easiest position in which to combine intercourse with direct clitoral stimulation, and it asks the least energy from both of you. It is a good one for the end of a long day.

Using a Hand or a Toy Is Not a Failure

This is where a lot of husbands get in their own way. Ruth Buezis said it well on the podcast: a husband being open to additional stimulation rather than taking it personally is one of the most important things he can do.

Nothing about adding a hand, hers or his, or a small vibrator, says the position did not work or that he is insufficient. Her anatomy needs clitoral stimulation. Delivering that through a hand instead of through friction alone is not a workaround. It is the mechanism.

If this is a conversation you have never had, our pillar on sexual communication in marriage is a better place to start than any position on this page.

Four Mistakes That Undo All of It

  • Rushing to penetration before she is aroused. Her body needs time to prepare, and no position compensates for skipping that. Take longer with foreplay than feels necessary.
  • Forgetting the clitoris once intercourse starts. Couples remember it during foreplay and then abandon it the moment penetration begins, which is precisely when she needs it most.
  • Changing position right when something is working. Orgasm builds on repetition. If a motion is working, the correct move is to keep doing that exact thing, for longer than feels natural.
  • Making orgasm the only goal. Some of the best encounters happen when the point is connection rather than a finish line. Pressure is the enemy of arousal, and she can feel it.

Ask Her

Everything above is mechanics, and mechanics only take you so far. The husbands who figure this out are not the ones who memorized the most positions. They are the ones who asked, out loud, and then listened without getting defensive about the answer.

Try it outside the bedroom, when neither of you is undressed and nothing is riding on the answer. Ask which of these she wants to try. Ask what has come closest. A five-minute conversation on a Tuesday will do more than any position on this list.

Sex Positions for Her Orgasm: Common Questions

What sex positions are best for her orgasm?

The ones that create steady clitoral contact rather than depth. Oral with her on top is the most reliable of all, and among intercourse positions, wife on top, the coital alignment technique, seated face to face, and side-lying with a free hand work best. In every case the adjustment matters more than the position itself.

Why can I not orgasm from penetration alone?

Because most women cannot. Fewer than a third reach orgasm from penetration by itself, and that is anatomy rather than a problem to fix. The clitoris carries the nerve endings, so positions and techniques that stimulate it directly are what make the difference.

Does a pillow under the hips really help?

Often, yes. It tilts the pelvis and changes the angle of entry by a few degrees, which can be the whole difference. Bodies vary a great deal, so experiment with one pillow, two, folded or flat, until you find the angle that works for you.

Should we grind or thrust?

Grind. A rocking or circular motion keeps clitoral contact constant, while thrusting breaks contact on every stroke. Once something is working, keep doing that same motion rather than varying it. Orgasm builds on repetition.

Is it okay to use a hand or a vibrator during sex?

Yes, and it is one of the most effective things you can do. Adding direct clitoral stimulation during intercourse is not a sign that anything failed or that a husband is insufficient. It is simply how her anatomy works.

How long should it take?

Longer than most couples expect, and that is normal. Many women need fifteen to twenty minutes of consistent stimulation. The most common mistake is stopping or switching things up right when it was starting to work.
