A yoni massage is a slow, unhurried massage of a wife’s vulva and the area around it, given with oil and without any particular destination in mind. That last part is what separates it from foreplay, and it is also the part most couples get wrong.
Foreplay has a job. It is warming her up for something else, and she can usually tell. A yoni massage is not warming her up for anything. The touch is the whole event, and that difference changes how her body responds to it more than any technique on this page.
Below is how to give one, in eight steps, plus the principle that matters more than all eight and what to do if she finds it hard to receive.
What “Yoni” Means, and What We Are Borrowing
Yoni is a Sanskrit word for the vulva, used in tantric practice. Lingam is the corresponding word for the penis, and our companion guide covers how to give a lingam massage. For the overview of both together, start with our guide to yoni and lingam massage.
Susan Bratton made a point about the word on the podcast that is worth keeping. Yoni refers to the whole system, inside and outside, rather than to one spot, and the word carries a note of reverence with it. You are approaching your wife with regard for all of her. That sounds like a small distinction and it is not, because plenty of wives have spent years feeling like a destination rather than a person, and that feeling is the thing most likely to be standing between her and enjoying this.
In case you’re wondering about the source: tantra is a religious tradition, and I’m not asking you to adopt it. We are borrowing the technique, which is slow touch and sustained attention. If a practice with an unfamiliar name makes you uneasy, “Is this okay for us to do?” is where I work through how to think that question through together.
Why This Is Worth an Evening
- It removes the thing that most often blocks her. When touch is heading somewhere, part of her is tracking where. Take the destination away and there is nothing to brace for, and a lot of wives find they can relax in a way they cannot during ordinary foreplay.
- It gives her arousal enough runway. Her body genuinely needs longer than his, and most couples never once find out what happens after twenty unhurried minutes because they have never spent twenty unhurried minutes.
- It teaches him her body properly. Not what worked once, but what she actually responds to, learned slowly and with the lights on enough to see.
The Bullseye Principle
Before the steps, the one idea that governs all of them. Susan Bratton calls it the bullseye, and I have not heard it put better.
Picture a target. The instinct is to go straight for the center, because that is where you think the pleasure is. The problem is that her body needs time to get there, and arriving at the center too early is not a shortcut. It is the thing that shuts the whole process down.
So you start at the outer rings and work inward, slowly, and you take much longer over it than feels necessary. Everything below is an application of that.
How to Give a Yoni Massage: 8 Steps
These are written to the husband, since he is usually the one giving. Wives, your only job is step zero: you are not responsible for how long this takes or for whether anything happens.
1. Set a timer, and set the room
Warm room, low light, door locked, a towel down. Set a timer for thirty to forty-five minutes and put it out of sight. The timer is the most useful item on this list because it answers the question neither of you wants to ask out loud, which is how long this is supposed to go on. Once it is set, nobody is watching the clock and nobody is rushing.
2. Warm the oil in your hands
Pour it into your palms and rub them together before you touch her. This matters more here than almost anywhere else, because cold oil on sensitive tissue undoes twenty minutes of relaxation in about a second. Use a proper personal lubricant, and use plenty. Avoid anything with fragrance or a warming agent.
3. Start nowhere near the vulva
Back, shoulders, arms, legs, feet. Give it a full ten minutes before you go anywhere else. This is not a formality. You are letting her nervous system come down out of the day, and a body that goes straight to genital touch stays in the same hurried gear it has been in since morning. Our guide to the erogenous zones most couples overlook maps the places most couples skip.
4. Work the outer rings
Now closer, but still not there. The lower belly, the crease of the groin, the inner thighs, and the soft pad over the pubic bone. That pad is worth real attention, because it sits directly over tissue that fills with blood as she becomes aroused, and warming it is part of what gets her there.
Slow, broad, full-hand pressure. You are not teasing her. You are doing the actual work.
5. The outer labia, then the inner
Long, slow strokes down the outer labia with a well-lubricated hand. Then gentle pressure between thumb and finger, working slowly along their length. Move to the inner labia the same way, unhurried, with far less pressure than feels like enough.
Watch her breathing rather than her face. Breathing tells you the truth sooner.
6. The hood, then the clitoris, feather-light
Start over the hood rather than directly on the clitoris. On episode 286 I made the point that an unaroused clitoris does not enjoy direct pressure, and getting this wrong early is the most common way a promising evening stalls out. Begin lighter than you think is useful. Small circles, or a slow side-to-side, or simply resting a fingertip there without moving at all.
As she builds, she may want more pressure or more speed. She will show you. Until then, err on the side of too light, and keep your other hand somewhere else on her body so the touch does not narrow down to one point.
7. Edge, and let her tap out
Edging means bringing her close and then easing off just before, then building again, several times over. Each cycle raises the baseline, and if she does finish it is considerably more intense for the buildup.
The practical difficulty is knowing when to ease off, and Tammy Hill has the best answer I have heard. Agree beforehand that when she is getting close, she taps you. On the arm, on the hand, anywhere. No words and no explaining. You feel the tap, you move your attention elsewhere for a minute, and then you come back. I talked with her about this on episode 111.
8. Finish deliberately, however you finish
Give her a two-minute warning before the timer so it does not stop abruptly. Then either let her go over or do not, but decide it rather than drifting. When you are done, rest a hand on her and stay there a minute without moving. Ending in stillness rather than in cleanup is a small thing that changes how the whole evening is remembered.
Should It End in Orgasm?
Decide beforehand. That is the entire answer, and it matters far more than which way you decide.
Agreeing in advance that it ends without orgasm takes an enormous amount of pressure off her, and for a wife who has ever felt like she was holding up the evening, that alone can be the thing that lets her enjoy it. Agreeing that it ends with one, after several rounds of edging, tends to make it a much bigger event than usual. Either is fine. What causes trouble is leaving it unspoken, because then she is guessing what you are hoping for, and guessing is the opposite of relaxed.
If orgasm is the part that never seems to arrive, our guide to helping your wife reach orgasm goes well beyond massage, and oral sex for women covers the other reliable route.
If She Cannot Relax Into It
This is common- plenty of wives find sustained attention genuinely difficult. She apologizes for taking too long. She reaches for you so the attention is not all one way. She narrates. She checks whether your arm is tired.
None of that is disinterest. Being looked at and attended to for forty minutes without being asked for anything is unfamiliar, and for a lot of women it feels close to self-indulgent. If it is happening, shorten it. Fifteen minutes is a perfectly good place to start, and it gets easier with practice.
It also helps if you say something at the start, out loud, about wanting to be there. On episode 286 I described a mental image for the giver that is worth borrowing: imagine your soul is a pitcher full of love and you are pouring it into your spouse through your hands. What you are thinking about while you touch her matters more than what your hands are doing.
And if the two of you have never talked about touch this directly, start with our pillar on sexual communication in marriage. Most of what goes wrong here goes wrong for want of one short conversation. For more on technique itself, see manual stimulation for her.
Common Questions About Yoni Massage
It is a slow, unhurried massage of a wife’s vulva and the area around it, given with oil and without a set destination. Yoni is a Sanskrit word for the vulva. What separates it from foreplay is that it is not warming her up for something else. The touch is the whole point, which is what allows her to relax into it.
Thirty to forty-five minutes is a good range, and setting a timer means neither of you is watching the clock. If she finds sustained attention hard at first, start at fifteen minutes. It gets easier with practice.
Nowhere near the vulva. Spend the first ten minutes on her back, shoulders, arms and legs, then work inward through the belly, groin and inner thighs. Going straight to the center is the most common mistake, because her body needs time to get there and arriving early tends to shut the process down.
Far less than you think, especially early. An unaroused clitoris does not enjoy direct pressure, so begin over the hood rather than on it, and start lighter than seems useful. She will show you when she wants more.
No, and deciding beforehand matters more than which way you decide. Agreeing in advance that it ends without orgasm takes real pressure off her. Agreeing that it ends with one, after several rounds of edging, usually makes it more intense than usual. Leaving it unspoken is the only bad option.
That is very common. Being attended to for a long stretch without being asked for anything is unfamiliar, and many wives find it feels self-indulgent at first. Shorten the session, say out loud that you want to be there, and let her get used to it. Fifteen minutes is a fine starting point.
