A few months before my wedding, I realized that I would soon have a need for lingerie. I was so excited by the prospect, but also so nervous. I made sure I was alone in my apartment, then opened an incognito tab to look up where to buy lingerie. To my dismay, it was all so expensive!
Lingerie is amazing, but it can be costly. For couples just starting out or living with a tight budget, it can feel overwhelming. This is compounded by the fact that when it comes to lingerie, we often want more than one option! We want to explore colors and styles and the vibes of different pieces.
Since my first time searching up lingerie, I have gathered ideas on how to find lingerie and sexy clothes within our budget. I’ve gotten ideas from friends and my wonderful coworkers. In this post, I’m going to share my tips on how to find affordable lingerie and how to fashion sexy outfits out of what you already have!
Why add Lingerie?
We already have a post called Lingerie 101 that can help you learn about the basics of lingerie, but let’s quickly go over the benefits of adding lingerie to your sexual experience. Lingerie is first and foremost for whoever is wearing it, which is typically women. Lingerie can help you feel sexy and confident! Lingerie can also be a cue to both partners that it’s time to transition to “sexy time”. Lingerie can help add mystery, excitement, and creativity.
Get Creative
Speaking of creativity, DIY lingerie is all about getting creative! Creativity is one of the pillars of a healthy and thriving sexual relationship. Accessing the creative parts of our brains will help us deepen intimacy by connecting us better to our emotions and imaginations. Creativity is also the best way to keep your sex life feeling fresh. In addition to saving money, DIY lingerie can help increase the creativity in your sexual relationship.
So how do you DIY lingerie? First of all, let me be clear I don’t know how to actually sew lingerie. But for those of you more skilled than me, here is a link to help you get started. However, if you are (like me) sewing impaired, there are still a lot of ways to create sexy outfits on a budget. The first step is brainstorming. There are so many things you wear or have around that you can use to create a sexy look. Ask your spouse which pieces of your wardrobe they find particularly alluring. Pick out your favorite outfits! Think about what characters or genres excite you. Look around your house and see what clothes, costumes, props, and other items you think you might be able to use. Here are the ideas I have gathered to help you get started!
DIY Lingerie
Sheets, Blankets, and Pillows
The simplest idea is to simply be naked. If you are wanting to mix things up and do something spontaneous, strip down to your birthday suit. You can then play around with the pillows, sheets, and blankets you have around to cover up and leave something to the imagination (at first). You can lay on the bed, on the couch, or find a way to fashion a sheet into a makeshift dress. This idea is simple, costs nothing, but is evocative and sexy.
Bathing Suits and Cover-Ups
Another very simple, but oft overlooked option is to use bathing suits and cover-ups in the bedroom. Bathing suits are typically the most revealing part of our wardrobe. However, chances to go straight from the beach to the bedroom can be sparse (especially once kids come along). Don’t feel like you need an excuse to throw on your hottest swimsuit. Or throw on those pool shorts or little dress you have to wear over your swimsuit.
Reuse Halloween Costumes
Sex is one of the best venues for adults to play, use their imagination, and reconnect to their inner child. Therefore, a lot of people can find it really fun and sexy to access different parts of ourselves by playing a character. Even if you don’t want to fully embrace a roleplay, it can be fun to use costume pieces creatively to put together a sexy outfit.
For example, throw a cowboy hat on to prep for a wild ride. Or use a tiara to feel like a princess. Or get creative with a feather boa. You can be a goddess ready to be worshiped, or a witch brewing a love potion. This may feel awkward and/or silly at first, but bringing this element of fun and imagination into your relationship will help deepen your intimacy.
Creating with Food
An idea for the more adventurous couple is to create lingerie out of food. You can use fruit by the foot, licorice or other tasty snacks to fashion panties, pasties, and other items to cover parts of you. This can add a tempting initiative to sample your lingerie and reveal the beautiful body underneath.
Searching for a Bargain
If you are okay with spending a little money, you can put together a great look! Although it can feel really good to have high quality lingerie pieces, there are cheaper options that can give you the freedom to explore what silhouettes and styles you like. Stores like Ross and Marshalls can have nice pieces if you are willing to search. Thrift stores are not good places to find underwear, but you can find cheap pieces that you might feel sexy in (but maybe wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing outside of the bedroom). Give yourself permission to explore a little, knowing it’s not going to break the bank.
Get Creative!
There are so many ways you can “do it yourself” with lingerie! Even without money to spend, you are only limited by your imagination. Dressing sexy is not just about underwear, but creative outfits and looks that help you feel sexy. If you discover other tips for DIY lingerie, let us know!
