Nearly every article on how to give your husband a blow job is a list of moves. Do this with your tongue. Then this with your hand. Then this. And that’s genuinely helpful information. But, I have spent years coaching couples on their sex lives, and I can tell you that in almost every marriage where this is a sore spot, technique is not the problem.
The problem is that she is in her head the entire time:
- Wondering whether she is doing it right
- Wondering if he’s enjoying it or if he’s evaluating her
- Focusing so much on what she’s doing that’s it’s technical instead of enjoyable
The solution can’t be found just in technique tips.
Where to Get the Technique
Let me point you to the mechanics first, so you are not hunting for them.
- Our full oral sex guide for wives is the step-by-step walkthrough. Positions, hand technique, where the sensitive nerve endings are, what to do about where he finishes, erection issues, deep throating if you want it. It is thorough.
- Our post on whether oral sex is a sin in a Christian marriage has a shorter five-tip version alongside the faith question, if you want the quick list rather than the long read.
This post is the part neither of those can give you: how to stop performing and start enjoying yourself, so that the technique you already have actually lands.
The Thing That Actually Makes a Blow Job Good
When Danielle Savory came on the podcast, she said something that reframed this for me. It is not really about technique. It is about who you are being while you are doing it.
Her coaching is to decide in advance what you want to express. Playful. Adoring. Unhurried. In charge. Those are completely different experiences, and any of them works. What does not work is arriving with no intention and hoping a sequence of moves carries you.
“The way that you are showing up is in your control,” she said. That is the sentence worth remembering. You cannot control whether he loves a particular technique on a particular night. You can control how you show up, and if you settle that beforehand, everything else gets easier. The full conversation is in episode 137 with Danielle Savory, with a follow-up in episode 257.
I will add something I have said on the show more than once. A lot of wives describe this act as though it puts them in a powerless position. Look at the actual mechanics of it. You set the pace. You decide when it starts and when it stops. You have teeth. If anybody in that room is in control, it is you. Wives who feel that shift report that the whole thing changes, and husbands notice immediately.
Unlearn the Script First
Here is where most of the discomfort actually comes from. Hardly anyone was taught anything about this. What people absorbed instead came from porn, which is filmed to look a particular way on a camera rather than to feel good for either person in the room.
Savory named the consequence plainly. What gets modeled there is degrading, and it teaches women that this is something done to them rather than something they are choosing to do. If that is the only version you have ever seen, of course you are not enthusiastic about it. You would not be enthusiastic about anything you had only ever seen performed by someone who looked like they wanted to be elsewhere.
So throw that script out before you worry about a single technique. What you are going for has no camera, no audience and no need to be impressive. It is two people in a bedroom, both of whom are glad to be there.
Making Out With It Beats Working At It
This is the most useful practical thing Savory said, and it is not on any technique list I have seen. “If you’re making out with a penis, it’s going to be much different than just sucking it,” she put it.
Think kissing. Lips, tongue, moving around, wandering off and coming back. She mentioned that she rarely uses much actual suction, because sustained suction is not especially pleasurable for anybody involved. Most wives are working far harder than they need to.
That single reframe takes the labor out of it, because kissing is something you already know how to do and have never once worried about performing correctly.
Making out is supposed to be fun, passionate, enjoyable, and pleasurable!
Are you thinking about it as work or as play?
Relax- The Gag Reflex Is Just a Signal
Savory has the most useful framing on this I have come across. “It’s a reflex. It doesn’t mean that you’re going to throw up,” she said. It is your body registering that something is further back than it expected. That’s it.
Treating a gag as an emergency is what turns a small moment into the end of the encounter. It can just as easily be a signal to ease off, come up, breathe through your nose, and carry on. Nothing has gone wrong.
And while we are here: deep throating is optional. Plenty of couples never do it, and the head carries most of the nerve endings anyway. On episode 230, our guest Kaitlin talked about the throat-numbing sprays marketed for this, and her caution was the sensible one. Treat them as a tool rather than a crutch, and alternate, so you are not depending on a product that has to be fetched from a drawer at precisely the wrong moment.
Feedback Is Not Criticism
Kaitlin made another point on that episode that I think about often. She and her husband try things, and sometimes he tells her he did not love something. Her framing is that this is information, not a verdict. Every person is different, and what a another person or a magazine said worked is not a reliable guide to the man in front of you.
Wives who can hear try it this way instead without hearing you are bad at this get better at this faster than anyone else. Husbands, that cuts both ways. How you deliver that feedback decides whether you get to give any more of it.
What If You Do Not Enjoy It?
Then say so out loud, to your husband. This is not something to grit your teeth through for a decade while resentment quietly compounds.
It helps to separate two very different objections, because they have different answers. If the problem is taste, gagging, or an aching jaw, those are practical and they have practical fixes, most of which are in the guides linked above. If the problem is what the act makes you feel about yourself, no technique will touch it, and it deserves a real conversation instead.
Willingness matters more than frequency here. Something offered occasionally and genuinely is worth more to a marriage than something delivered often and reluctantly. If this is where you are stuck, episode 291 is a full Q&A on first-time nerves and performance pressure.
Husbands, This Runs Both Ways
If you want your wife to be enthusiastic about this, asking more often is not the lever. Making sure the pleasure in your marriage runs in both directions is. Read the guide to going down on your wife and get genuinely good at it. Wives notice which husbands have put in the same effort, and generosity tends to be reciprocal.
Then receive it well. Tell her what feels good while it is happening. Nothing flattens a wife’s confidence faster than silence, and nothing builds it faster than hearing that it is working.
And If You Are Wondering Whether This Is Okay at All
Short answer, yes. Scripture celebrates sexual pleasure inside marriage and never prohibits this. What matters is that both of you feel loved, respected and genuinely willing, never pressured. If the moral question is the live one in your marriage rather than the technique, start with our post on whether oral sex is a sin in a Christian marriage, and the wider framework is in our pillar on sex and faith in marriage.
If opening the conversation at all is the hard part, our 29 spicy questions to ask your spouse were built for exactly that.

Blow Job Questions Married Couples Ask
Intention and enthusiasm, far more than technique. A wife who is visibly enjoying herself and moderately skilled beats a wife who is highly skilled and clearly enduring it, and husbands can tell the difference easily. Decide beforehand how you want to show up, and let the rest follow from that.
Confidence, and it is not close. Technique can be learned in an afternoon. Being in your head the whole time wondering whether you are doing it right is what actually flattens the experience for both of you.
Usually because the only version they have ever seen came from porn, where it is filmed to look a certain way rather than to feel good, and where it is often framed as something done to a woman rather than something she is choosing. Recognizing where that picture came from is most of the work of undoing it.
Gagging is normal and it is not a stop sign. It is a reflex, not a sign that anything has gone wrong, and it does not mean you are about to be sick. Ease off, come up, breathe through your nose, and carry on if you want to.
Say so to your husband rather than quietly enduring it. Then work out which problem it is. Taste, gagging and jaw ache are practical and have practical fixes. If the discomfort is about what the act makes you feel about yourself, that needs a conversation, not a technique.
By making sure pleasure in the marriage runs both ways, by never pressuring, and by telling her what feels good while it is happening. Silence is the fastest way to flatten a wife’s confidence. Feedback offered kindly is the fastest way to build it.
