323: Your Roommate Marriage Isn’t Caused by Distance—It’s This

Does your marriage feel more like a roommate arrangement than a romantic relationship?

Most people assume roommate mode happens because couples have grown too far apart. But I think the opposite is often true: couples become too merged, too careful, and too afraid to disagree.

Over time, difficult subjects—sex, money, parenting, in-laws, faith, or unmet desires—get placed on an unspoken “do not touch” list. Avoiding those differences may keep the peace temporarily, but it also creates emotional distance and slowly drains intimacy and desire from the relationship.

In this episode, I’ll explain how this pattern develops, why more date nights or surface-level validation won’t necessarily solve it, and how learning to tolerate differences can help you build a marriage with room for two distinct people.

I’ll also walk you through three practical steps for changing the pattern:

  • Spot the dance you and your spouse keep repeating
  • Steady yourself instead of reacting automatically
  • Switch your step and respond with greater honesty and intention

You don’t get out of roommate mode simply by trying to get closer. You get out by creating more room for two—two people who can love each other deeply without erasing their differences.
