How to Arouse Your Husband: What Actually Turns Him On

Dan Purcell

Hi, I’m Dan! I have Master’s Degree in Counseling and am a professional marriage coach, with a specialty in helping Christian couples find joy and connection through sexual intimacy. My wife Emily and I are the founders of Get Your Marriage On! We have 6 children and love the outdoors.

Most advice on how to arouse your husband is a list of moves. Wear this, touch him there, try that position. Some of it works, a little, for a while.

But at our couples retreats I ask the men in the room the same question every time: what is the biggest turn-on for a man? And every time, the answer comes back before I have finished asking. Being with a woman who is turned on.

How do you arouse your husband? Let him see that you want him and that you are enjoying yourself. For most men, a wife who is genuinely turned on is more arousing than any outfit or technique. Initiate sometimes, let your pleasure show, take what you want, build anticipation during the day, and let him off protector duty. Technique matters, but it comes second.

The Biggest Turn-On Is You, Turned On

This is not just my retreat group talking. Esther Perel, one of the best-known therapists working on desire, makes the same point: for men, being with a turned-on woman is the most arousing thing there is. I wrote about that retreat conversation in the complementary nature of male and female sexuality, and the men in the room did not just agree. They applauded.

Researchers who collected people’s accounts of their best sexual experiences found something similar. When men describe their most memorable times, nine out of ten of them describe her: her pleasure, her joy, the fact that he got to be part of it. Not how intense his own orgasm was. Hers.

So here is the reframe I want you to take away. Your enjoyment is not a side effect of good sex for your husband. For most husbands, it is the main event.

Why Obligation Does the Opposite

The flip side matters just as much. Sex given out of obligation, to get him off your back for a few days, is not arousing to most men. On episode 248 we talked about how it can feel almost condescending to a husband: here is my body, but my heart is somewhere else. Sex is not just a physical release for him. It is closeness, and he can feel when it is missing.

That is good news, because it means you do not have to perform. You do not need to become someone you are not. If duty sex has crept into your marriage, the way out is not trying harder at sex you do not want. It is finding the sex you do want.

7 Ways to Arouse Your Husband

1. Let him see that you want him

Many husbands go years without hearing their wife say she wants them. Say it. Out loud, in a text, in a whisper on the way out the door. And now and then, be the one who starts things. Being wanted is one of the most arousing things a man can feel. Our guide on how to initiate sex has ideas if that feels unfamiliar.

2. Let your pleasure show

Make noise. Breathe. Move toward what feels good. This is not about putting on a show, and please do not fake anything. It is about not hiding what is real. A lot of women were taught to be quiet and composed in bed, and a lot of husbands are left guessing whether any of it is landing. When he can see and hear you enjoying yourself, you are giving him the thing he finds most arousing.

3. Take what you want

Guide his hands. Ask for the touch you like. Stay where it feels good a little longer. On episode 289 I said, half joking, that healthy sexuality for a woman is a little bit self-centered, and I meant it. You spend all day caring for other people. In bed, you get to be the center for once. That is not selfish. For most husbands, it is exactly the turn-on they have been hoping for.

4. Start building anticipation in the morning

Arousal does not have to start in the bedroom. A flirty text at lunch, a lingering kiss in the kitchen, a quiet line about what you are thinking about for later. By evening, he has been looking forward to you all day. Try a few of our sexy text messages, or if you want to go further, our guide to talking dirty at your own comfort level. Our guide to foreplay all day long has more.

5. Touch him with nowhere to get to

Most husbands are touched in one place, for one purpose. Try the rest of him. His neck, his chest, his inner thighs, the small of his back, the perineum. Our list of erogenous zones most couples overlook is a good map. Slow, curious touch that is not in a hurry to get anywhere tells him you are enjoying his body, not just getting something done.

6. Let him off protector duty

This one surprises people. Most men carry a strong instinct to protect. That is a good instinct in a marriage, but in the bedroom it can work against desire. When a husband feels he has to be careful with you, tiptoe around you, or guard you from his own wanting, his desire tends to go quiet. When you are clearly into it, he does not have to protect you. He gets to just enjoy you.

The same goes the other way. Let him be human. A husband who can tell you he is stressed or unsure, and still feel wanted, is a husband who can relax into sex.

7. Wear what makes you feel good

Lingerie can be great, but the magic is rarely in the fabric. It is in how you feel wearing it. Choose what makes you feel confident and beautiful, not what you think he expects, and he will notice the confidence first. Lingerie 101 is a good place to start, and our conversation about boudoir and self-acceptance is worth a listen if you struggle to feel sexy in your own skin. For something more playful, try a strip tease.

Where Technique Comes In

Technique still matters. It just works best on top of everything above, not in place of it. When you want the hands-on details, we have them:

If You Do Not Feel Like a “Sexy Wife” Right Now

Maybe you read this and thought: that is great, but I am not turned on most of the time. You are not broken. Many women experience responsive desire, where wanting shows up after things get started, not before. You do not have to manufacture desire you do not feel. You can start with what does feel good, a kiss, a back rub, lying close, and let it build from there.

And if desire has been hard to find for a while, our guide on how to get in the mood goes deeper. Arousing your husband should never come at the cost of ignoring yourself. The whole point of this article is that your pleasure matters. And if feeling attractive at all is the struggle right now, read what makes a wife sexy. It is not about looks.

Go Deeper Together

If you want time set aside to explore this as a couple, our Virtual Lovemaking Retreat this November is built for exactly that, from your own home. And if you would rather get away together, our in-person couples retreat in April is where the conversation that started this article happened.

How to Arouse Your Husband: Common Questions

What turns a husband on the most?

For most men, the biggest turn-on is being with a wife who is genuinely turned on herself. Seeing and hearing her enjoy sex, and knowing she wants him, is usually more arousing than any outfit or technique.

How can I arouse my husband without touching him?

Build anticipation during the day. Send a flirty text, tell him you are looking forward to later, or kiss him a little longer than usual. Telling him plainly that you want him is one of the most arousing things a husband can hear.

What if I don’t feel sexy enough to arouse my husband?

You do not have to feel sexy first. Many women have responsive desire, where wanting shows up after things start. Begin with touch that feels good to you and let it build. Your genuine enjoyment matters far more to him than looking a certain way.
